Jonas Jaanimagi, head of media strategy for REA Group, owner of realestate.com.au, told the audience at day one of the Urban Development Institute of Australia National Congress that Millennials, defined as Generations Y, Z and Alpha, were fast-becoming a dominant demographic for the industry.

Almost a quarter of the property portal’s browsers are aged 25 to 35 year olds, according to their data.

“They were born with a mobile phone in their hand,” Mr Jaanimagi said.

He said Developers needed to look ahead and tap into modern values of ethical and eco-friendly building and high technology homes.

“The majority of Millennials want to live in an uber-connected home,” he said.

Young home-buyers Jessica Abram, 26, and Michael Holmes, 30 recently bought an off-the-plan apartment.

Ms Abram said “a large chunk” of the couple’s research was done online.

“When we were first looking for a place we used realestate.com.au a lot to get an initial price for the area and see what was available,” she said.

“Especially for an apartment, it was good for seeing different floor plans.

“It makes it easier and it also gives you a broader vision (of the market).”
